State of Electric Motorcycles September 2020

Hello and welcome to the State of Electric Motorcycles September 2020. Here's the last update from November 2019. This is a fast-moving industry so if you're reading this 1 year from now hahaha look at all this outdated information and paltry offerings. Seriously this is some Wild West frontier industry stuff. I love it.
I will write some of this geared towards people who have been living under a rock and didn't know EV bikes existed. I may also write some technical stuff which I may denote as skippable so you don't get oversaturated with jargon.
I treat companies producing bikes you can purchase and actually receive with more clout. Reservations, pre-orders, and hopes and dreams can mostly fuck off.
Based near sunny fiery Santa Cruz, California, Zero has been doing this the longest and has the largest share of the market. They started out making electric bicycles with a bunch of delightful nerdy hackers and kept adding more power, eventually making small motorcycles. They got bigger and sportier over time and offered both dirt and road models. Their bread and butter has traditionally been the commuter market. In 2019 they dipped their toe into the water of sport bikes with their SF and its faired cousin, the SS. They are exceptionally proud of it. Zero has the most diverse lineup, which is no surprise as they've been in the game the longest. They have 3 main branches of models with several sub-models under each category: All Zeroes use their in-house designed motor and belt-drive, with some models given a chain option.
This is their dirt bike platform featuring the FX and FXS (supermoto). They are very lightweight and incredibly fun. I think the FXS is probably the best short-range urban commuter bike on the market, and most YouTubers that have played with it would back up that assertion. As expected, the battery capacity is half of their street models, so don't expect more than 40 miles at highway speeds. Stupidly fun, though, and often called Zero's best kept secret. They do, however, take around 8 hours to charge.
Lumping these all together because they're all the same frame/powertrain. This is their main urban commuter, and has been their bread and butter since 2013. S and SR are Street models, while the DS/DSR have some part swaps from the FX line to make them more like a Dual Sport. These bikes take around 5-10 hours to charge, but can be fitted with a OEM upgrade that will drop it to 1-2 hours and use EV stations. In 2020 Zero decided the S and DS, being the more basic models, should only have the smaller batteries that the FX line has. With the exception of the software-limited EU bikes that don't require licenses. Honestly it gets confusing.
Zero's newest pride and joy, a naked streetfighter. Has the same battery as the S line, but a slightly larger motor and new controller which together allow for more sustained power and torque than previous models. It is also the first Zero to natively embrace EV stations for either 4 or 2 hour charge. Also was the first to adopt Bosch's new high-end traction control, which is a huge leap forward for them, technologically. This is the lightest of the high end street bikes I'll be talking about.
Identical powertrain to the SF but some important ergonomic changes. The primary difference is an FIM-style fairing. Engineers at Zero realized if they can't embrace DC Fast Charging yet it's in their best interest to tackle aerodynamics. Motorcycle aerodynamics are a TRAINWRECK and almost no one realizes or cares, but someone said, "Hey, if we make the bike slip through the air better we can make it go more miles without touching the battery." So they did. Other than that they also lowered the footpegs, changed mirror position, and adjusted the seat a bit to make it overall a bit more relaxed and comfortable. I applaud them for their wise moves and using brainpower to do more with less. Efficiency is a largely untapped area in motorcycles. Kudos to them.
Hailing from Modena, Italy, Energica (pronounced like it rhymes with America) started making electric race bikes and decided they wanted to make a go of selling street bikes. Whereas Zero pieced their bikes together as they found investors and cobbled together what eventually became nice bikes, Energica is a division of a larger parent company that decided to put a lot of planning into anything before they built a bike. They started selling bikes in the EU around 5 years ago, and began offering US models in 2017. The build quality is very high and they pride themselves on using quality components, including all carbon fiber body work on Ego and Eva models All models have the same chassis, motor, and controller, but as of last year there are potentially 2 different batteries, and this is important. These are all sport bikes and consider themselves as competitors for Ducati rather than Zero. All Energicas are chain driven.
The track bike that started it all. Has the highest top speed and most torque. This is their flagship monster. Track positioning, clip-ons, FIM fairing. Not my thing but goddamn it feels like a terrifying luge sled.
I guess Ribelle means Rebel in Italian. Basically this is a naked streetfighter version of the Ego but made a little comfier with handlebars instead of clip ons and a more upright seating position. This is the bike I want.
Named after a famous Italian road, this is the most upright and comfortable of their bikes with an even more upright position, friendly round headlight, and big plushy seat. I currently own a 2018 SS9. I love friendly, round headlights. Bike is quite comfortable. And the blue brings out my eyes~
In my last update I gave some incorrect information about the bike. Being that this is reddit, and has viewers from all walks of life, a very proud engineer who worked on this bike contacted me to set the record straight. I actually enjoy being proved wrong about things because it's very often a learning experience. This guy had a lot of data to back up his claims and quickly proved that my ego was cutting checks my body couldn't cash. Yes, it is the most expensive of the bikes here by far, but it's actually very well-built. Look, anyone can strap a huge motor and controller to a frame and shove batteries in. What H-D did was pack batteries in a frame intelligently with possibly the best thermal management on the market, coupled with a solid drivetrain. The LiveWire is $30,000 USD. Elephant in the room. Is it well-made? Fuck yes. Does it have problems? Yes.
Our personal H-D LiveWire review.. It's mostly positive but covers some of the ugly sides of the bike as well.
Where to begin. Yes, this company has been featured on Jay Leno's garage. Yes, this company makes claims to be the fastest production motorcycle in the world, the LS-218, named for the 218mph top speed it saw on a GoPro at Bonneville. Actual recorded times differ. Journalists make claims they've been delivering bikes for years. The problem is these claims are fraught with problems.
I can only find about 4 of these in existence. They're listed as $38,000 bikes. None of them feature any rider aides and the batteries are completely unshielded. No safeties, housings, or protections. And journalists don't seem to care. Frankly it's unnerving.
This is the consumer model they announced in 2019. It would come in 3 variants: Carbon, Mid-grade, and base level. The Carbon Edition promised a $20,000 bike that had 20kWh battery (fucking cool), 150mph top speed, DC fast charging in 30 minutes, and lots of other cool stuff. The mid grade would have a 15kWh pack, and the base would have a 10kWh pack at like $13k. Very attractive on paper. Lightning promised that Carbon Editions would ship first. As of September, 2020, I can confirm the existence of at least 4, maybe 5 Carbon Edition bikes. None of them appear to have the promised specifications. At least 3 of them have entry-level specs for which the owners paid the full $20,000. None have any housings on the batteries, rider aides, distance-till-empty gauges, kickstand sensors, or even stoppers on the handlebars to keep the rider from hitting the bodywork on a sharp low speed turn. Or belt guards. Or protection from basic weather like rain. fuck. Also the build quality is abysmal.
Our personal Lightning Strike review. This is part 3 It's also the most poignant of the 3 part review because it has lots of data.
Eastern-European-headed Chinese-produced Evoke have traditionally targeted the urban commuter just under the Zero market. They use hub motors on their bikes which is seen as cheap and unsafe, the kind of thing you'll find on Alibaba/AliExpress specials. A hub motor, for the uninitiated, is an electric motor that fits inside the rear wheel. It's narrow so it has less power, but it provides extra room for batteries in the chassis. Also they're cheap. And damn near silent. The main gripe about hub motors is they're a lot of weight outside of the suspension aka unsprung weight. Companies that embrace hub motors generally promote slower bikes so high-speed handling isn't an issue. This may be fine for commuters.
Basic hub motor bike but also charges off EV standard J1772. This is one of the main thing that sets Evoke above the infinite sea of nameless hub motor Chinese bikes.
STILL IN CONCEPT PHASE. Normally I don't lend credence to concept bikes, but Evoke has a proven track record with their previous bikes. They've been working for the last 3-4 years on an electric cruiser and recently unveiled it. The battery, around 23kWh if I recall, is the largest EV motorcycle battery announced. It is made up entirely of 18650 cells which will tell EV nerds something. The main deal is the pack is ENTIRELY liquid cooled. No one else is offering something like this. What it means is the entire pack could charge in 15 minutes. If this makes it to market as planned it will be really freaking interesting. Also they're using a traditional mid-drive motor, not a hub for this thing.
PURE CONCEPT. However if I don't write a thing here there will be people going "WELL WHY DIDN'T YOU MENTION THE DAMON HYPERSPORT"
These guys surfaced after producing a tech demo of a bike full of sensors and cameras to protect the rider. Also adjustable handlebars and pegs to make the riding experience more awesome. That's all it was. They wanted to sell their tech. Then, somehow, someone offered them a giant bag of money and said, "MAKE IT". Ever since then they have created what can only be described as the most impressive PR campaign electric motorcycling has ever seen. Why yes, it'll have 200hp. It'll go 200mph. It'll have a 20kWh battery pack. It will DC fast charge in 30 minutes and also feature a large AC charger on it. Which also can power your house. And we developed all of this tech and awesome stuff in about a year whereas it took Energica and H-D 6 years to decide on a proper battery pack configuration and test it for months in Arizona. We are promising you the Sun, the Moon, and the stars. We're just that good! We have no track record but the PR people we hired with our investor money will make it all seem incredible. There's literally nothing this bike can't do. Except exist. PLEASE consider this carefully before placing pre-orders.
Who are you and why should we listen to you?
I've been riding motorcycles my whole life. I've been riding electric for the last 3 years or so. I had 2 Zeroes and sold them both for an Energica SS9, which I currently ride. I have done multiple long range trips, which isn't really what these bikes were intended for, but I liked pushing their limits and also love riding them. I also used to make fast-charging parts for Zero motorcycles. For the last 3 years I have gone through a hell of a crash-course learning all this, and I keep a very close eye on who is making what in the industry. I am also a mod of /zeromotorcycles (even though I sold mine), as well as /EnergicaMotorcycles , /HarleyLiveWire , and /Electricmotorcycles . Also, while I have worked with H-D, Zero, and Energica, I am not a representative of any of them. I've written about a lot of these things.
What are some reasons I would want an electric motorcycle?
The best answer I can give you is they're really, really fun to ride. No clutch, no gears, just pure monster torque delivered instantly. No engine vibration means they're eerily smooth. Sometimes it feels like ice skating on the road. It's a joy. Maintenance is also severely reduced as there are no spark plugs, no valves, etc. You've got brakes, tires, and sometimes chains. There's 1 moving part. Another thing I didn't think too much about but a Florida rider pointed out recently is there's no heat kicking off the bike in the hot summer. All these things lead to a phenomenal riding experience. Also the knowledge that you can smoke pretty much anyone off the line is a good feeling. It's a perfect launch every time. If you're into EVs for environmental reasons, you can get even more self-righteous with a motorcycle. "Nice Tesla; how many watt/hours per mile are you consuming you filthy peasant? You make me sick wasting all that energy."
How far does it go and how long does it take to charge?
Basic rule for EVs is they behave the opposite of gas engines. The range becomes less impressive at highway speeds, and is phenomenal for the city. If you got 50 miles highway range, expect basically double that for city, and somewhere in between if you ride a mix of both.
Zero and H-D both have similar numbers for range, around 70-80 miles at 70mph. Expect around 150 for the city. Energicas have the longest range at ~112 miles at highway speeds, and around 250 for the city. It's little wonder because they have the largest battery packs by a significant amount.
As far as charging this is where things vary wildly and I will have to go into this later in more depth. The short answer is the Energica charges in under an hour, and the LiveWire charges in an hour. The Zero SF and SS platform promises anywhere from 1-4 hours depending on a variety of factors, and indeed US models are only capable of a 2 hour charge. I am a strong advocate of the fastest charging possible because that's what makes these bikes useful instead of just expensive commuters. Every bikes offers the option to charge at home which will generally take ~10-15 hours. Actually screw it let's discuss charging now.
How do I charge bike????
Every one of the bikes available now will be able to charge from a home wall outlet. It will take anywhere from 10-15 hours to do a full charge. This is commonly called Level 1 charging.
The next step up is the EV stations you see in parking structures or scattered around businesses and other places. In North America these are J1772 or "J plugs". In the rest of the world they use a Mennekes Type 2 plug which is so, so much better. They have the capability to charge most of these bikes in ~2 hours. Sometimes these stations are free, sometimes you pay with an app on your phone. For paid stations in most cases you're looking at a buck or two for a full charge. This is commonly called Level 2 charging.
Level 1 and Level 2 are both Alternating Current (AC) power pulled right from the grid and going into a sort of communications box. They rely on the bike's onboard charger to convert it to DC to feed into the battery, almost exactly like the power supply on your computer. You know how you can buy big powerful 900 Watt power supplies? The ones on the bikes usually run either 3000 or 6000 Watts (3kW or 6kW respectively). Zero motorcycles only offer level 1 or level 2 charging. Energica offers all options, but their level 2 power is a little modest. H-D opted to skip level 2 entirely so if you plug into an EV station you will be there upwards of 13 hours before full. No one would actually do that in reality, though. At least I hope not.
DC Fast Charging (DCFC) is the next step up, and is commonly called Level 3 charging. With this method the station says, "fuck your bike's onboard charger, I'm going to have my own converter in a protective housing that will deliver insane amounts of power", like maybe 60,000 Watts (60kW). Some stations do more, some do less. They do this with one of two* interfaces, CCS or CHAdeMO. These stations are capable of charging some bikes in as little as 20 minutes, but not all bikes can use these. There are no bikes that use CHAdeMO, so you can mostly forget about it unless Kawasaki brings their weird thing to market. Energica bikes do a full charge at CCS in 40 minutes, or 0-80% in 30 minutes. The H-D LiveWire, at the same station, will do a full charge in 60 minutes, or 0-80% in 40 minutes.
*Tesla SuperChargers also qualify as DCFC stations but for now strictly limit themselves to Tesla vehicles. There are ways to reverse-engineer and use Tesla's level 2 Destination chargers, but not their SuperChargers.

The vaccine in of itself is not the endgame

Earlier this week, I was commenting on a thread and was asked a question on what I think is the endgame for the Pfizer vaccine. With this post I want to further flesh out my trail of thought and I believe this subreddit would be the best place to do so.
Before we begin, however, a small disclaimer: this is all speculation and conjecture and is the result of a thought experiment in the mind of a sovereign individual who enjoys to think, question and postulate hypotheses. I cannot prove any of it, so read it as you would read fiction.
Now, on with it:

The vaccine in of itself is not the endgame

But it provides a framework and foundation for a method of mass population control. A trail of thought:

Service Access Control

Ticketmaster plans to prohibit anyone from attending events without a negative test result in the past 24-72 hours. Many details of the plan, which is still in development phase, will rely on three separate components -- the Ticketmaster digital ticket app, third party health information companies like CLEAR Health Pass or IBM's Digital Health Pass and testing and vaccine distribution providers like Labcorp and the CVS Minute Clinic. (source: https://www.billboard.com/articles/business/touring/9481166/ticketmaster-vaccine-check-concerts-plan/)
On the surface of it, to prevent the spread of the virus at mass gatherings, this does appear to be a reasonable, simple and understandable logic. Most people won't think twice and just accept it because it makes sense because it makes sense in stopping the spread of the virus.
Members of the US president elect's COVID task force suggests to bundle services that are already being provided to particularly vulnerable populations in the context of COVID (eg, older adults, low-income adults, Black and minority communities) as a way to build trust and streamline vaccine provision. This includes but is probably not limited to: food security, rent assistance, free clinic services. (source: https://www.naturalnews.com/files/200709-The-Publics-Role-in-COVID-19-Vaccination.pdf)
Now as we've already been conditioned to "wear a mask", "keep your distance" and "wash your hands" notifications before entry anywhere, it's not such big a leap to "proof of vaccine or no admittance" signs popping up everywhere. This will effectively require you to prove you've been vaccinated in order to attend events, access medical care, buy groceries, cross a border, ...
(Note: this does not require the virus itself to be a hoax, but we are conditioned to the masks and the overall literature depicting and delimiting appropriate behavior required to access services)
Edit: as noted by Coches in the comments below, Slovakia has begun blanket testing and implementing harsh restrictions similar to house arrest for those that do not comply with voluntary testing (source: https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/02/europe/slovakia-mass-coronavirus-test-intl/index.html)

Now that the general public is primed to accept these measures comes the next question, for those of us that still ask questions, how will we meet these requirements and prove that we've been vaccinated? Now some of us conspiracy theorists suggested the vaccine will contain a micro chip with RFID that can be scanned at checkpoints. While we do have this technology available, our overlords know that we won't accept this yet. Instead, it's far easier to use the technology that's already in place en masse. Just look at how Ticketmaster is creating an app to join forces with medical data gathering houses.
We can give everyone who's vaccinated a unique and globally identifiable token in a central government controlled database. You can authenticate on these apps using a government issued token which you receive upon vaccination and then provide the checkpoints with a QR code that validates your vaccination status thus giving you access to these public and private services. Not really that hard nowadays if you know anything of IT.
Anyway, now that we've established identification and verification at various private and public service checkpoints, there's a couple of tangents that seem unrelated to the uninitiated of "connecting the dots".

5G Localization

"5G spr3ADs CoRonA V1rus!" is a false flag conspiracy theory. What I mean by that is that is a theory inserted into the conspiracy community to make us look like dim-witted fools and to ostracize anyone questioning 5G.
In a technologically advance world, we do need such network for all the Internet of Things to communicate efficiently with as little ping as possible. One of the benefits of 5G is that we can pinpoint a device's location to up to decimeter accuracy (source: https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/industry-articles/how-will-5g-networks-improve-location-awareness/)
This is great news because we have the ID2020 installed on our smartphones and that means that the authorities can locate any one registered individual to their exact location at all times. Because let's not forget, you can't access any public or private service without proper identification (the vaccination registration database makes sure of that)
Of course, the rural areas will continue to enjoy 4G with it's lesser advanced technology, but you can still be tracked to within a couple of meters of accuracy.

End-to-End Encryption

The first tangent I want to explore are the global attempts at banning end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) communication and encrypted data in cloud storage.
In the US, the EARN-IT act attempts to backdoor E2EE, this act is now in the house of representatives (source: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/10/urgent-earn-it-act-introduced-house-representatives) as well as the Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act that aims to subvert secure cloud data storage (source: https://www.globalsign.com/en/blog/why-lawful-access-encrypted-data-act-threat-your-rights-and-privacy)
Recently, this topic has come up at the EU council as well, weighing the pros and cons of encryption in privacy vs (state) security. It doesn't straightforward suggest to ban or backdoor E2EE, but it does state that "law enforcement and judicial authorities must be able to access data in a lawful and targeted manner" (source: https://www.statewatch.org/media/1434/eu-council-draft-declaration-against-encryption-12143-20.pdf)
This is the point where I should tell you to read between the lines, but let me spell out my thoughts anyways: both EU and US are under the control of the same shadow government.

Big Data Algorithms

All major social media platforms collect your data and run it through an algorithm to build a profile of you so it can feed you content you are more likely to interact with. TikTok being the latest addition which is currently the third most downloaded non-gaming app of the year (source: https://www.omnicoreagency.com/tiktok-statistics/)
TikTok has a really good algorithm that gives users the content that they want. So good in fact that the US government threatened to ban the app if it didn't get a piece of the pie (or do you really think it was about the security and privacy of its citizens after proposing two bills that undermine this anyway?)
Extensive data collection + algorithm = digital gold for marketeers and governments alike. That profile that is built with the collected data from social media applications reflects not only your interests commercially but also your political ideologies.

Quarantine Camps

New Zealand, an example to the entire world in terms of progressiveness, is raising quarantine camps to hold anyone testing positive (even against their will) until they test negative. (source: https://thegreggjarrett.com/new-zealand-announces-quarantine-camps-where-positive-patients-will-be-forcibly-placed/)
This is a precursor to vaccination camps, where we will be culling the population that does not comply with the "guidelines" at first and later anyone that can be profiled as a dissident to the New World Order (based on social media big data collection and the compromise of your E2EE private messaging)
If you do not believe people are capable of such atrocities, I suggest you read the Gulag Archipelago, an account of the Communist regime in the USSR of past century. Or do you think we humans have evolved beyond such systemic incarceration? Just look at the war on drugs and how many people are behind bars for what is now being legalized (Cannabis and psychedelics) There's no need for physical torture if they can just lock you up where you can do no harm to "civilized" society.

The Plan

In summary, the population needs to keep its attention focused on elected and fact-checked news outlets in which the authorities will tell you what the narrative is. Keeping you fear-induced and providing you with the deus ex machina solution (a well known marketing strategy, source: https://brenits.com/scare-tactics-in-branding-and-marketing/ and https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2015/10/fear-based-appeals)
Most people will get their vaccine as such and just like that. Then another portion of the population will get theirs to get access to the services they need. Vaccination camps will be introduced for anyone unwilling to comply.
Because we won't accept RFID chips just yet, we start by introducing the smartphone as the first platform to track your vaccination / compliance status to access services you require.
All of this can be linked to our social media accounts as well as your private communications upon which a profile can be built. Anyone profiled as a threat to the New World Order can have their vaccination status revoked, be located and sent to vaccination camps (remember, their goal is not the vaccination in of itself, that's only the narrative, the reality is to get rid of dissidents)

The Goal

What's the purpose of all this though? A New World Order? The Great Reset?
The social contract is changing, whether we like it or not. Watch the World Economic Forum's video on the Great Reset (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHRkkeecg7c) and tell me these people aren't bigger than governments.
It's the pandemic now, the climate crisis next. We will police ourselves into ushering in a New World Order. On the one hand I can believe this to bring about a global Utopian society without warring countries, pandemics or climate crises. But ignorance is bliss until you take a closer look at how we get there, there's a shadow that stains the soul of humanity.
I assure you, the frog never noticed the water heating up until it was boiling. But please, do keep watching television, believe the mainstream narrative, do not question your leaders on the magic picture box for they hold all the answers and the alternative is far uglier.

Do Not Dispair

On a retrospective note, I do not wish for anyone to become afraid and would like to point to Charlie Chaplin's final speech at the end of The Great Dictator:
To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.
