Looking for a budget laptop for school / photo editing / browsing / streaming services
- Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: ~$1000 USD
- Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes, but would prefer new.
- How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'm mainly concerned about build quality / reliability, along with good battery life. Ultrabook is my preferred form factor.
- How important is weight and thinness to you? Relatively important. My current laptop (Toshiba Satellite S55a) is about 4.8 lbs and it can be a pain to carry around work/school.
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 or around there would be great.
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I mainly do all of that on my PC, but do use Adobe Lightroom CC on my laptop at times. Games I've played on my current laptop that i would play again: Project 1999 (classic Everquest server as it was in release ~1999), Diablo 2, Fallout 3 New Vegas, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Nintendo 64 emulator.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dont do too much gaming other than P99 and the ones listed above. I'm fine with playing game such as Fallout 3 NV/Oblivion on medium settings as long as it runs smooth.
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality and a good keyboard would be the main things. No need for a finger-print reader or optical drive. An SD card reader would be great but not necessary. I do like a backlit keyboard as well.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Overall I'm just looking for a good laptop in my price range that I can use for years to come. I don't do a lot of super demanding stuff on my laptop, as that is mainly reserved for my PC. The laptop is mainly for school, Netflix, one or two games, and being able to browse the internet while I'm away from home / travelling. Lightweight and thin would be great while keeping a somewhat decent sized screen. Thanks for any help!
Thursday Boot Co. Presidents in Whiskey - An Initial Impression.
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. As such, I do not know if the following format is correct, too long, or needs further editing, but I think I know the general format from reading a wide number of posts. Please let me know if something needs touching up - feedback is always welcomed!
As what seems to be customary, the link to the Imgur album comes first and is below (since I do not know how to format images here on Reddit itself):
Feel free to skip the background if it's just the boots you want to know about - I just thought it would be beneficial to add some context and history to supplement this mini-review.
I'm a young university student living in Australia and have been looking at boots for quite some time now - since 2014, to be precise. Now that I'm a little older since then, my taste has matured and am now looking for a good, versatile, starter boot to begin my journey with. My current, and only, pair of boots were purchased out of necessity in late 2017 when I travelled to Canada to visit family. Being that it was my first time there, my choice of footwear was (horribly) inappropriate, since I had only brought along my trusty Converse All-Star Hi-Tops. Needless to say, I needed appropriate footwear fast, and I thought that this was a good opportunity to buy some boots! So, I went to the nearest Hudson's Bay and got myself a pair of light brown/natural coloured, service-boot-inspired boots. They had a (most likely) 'genuine leather' upper (or fake, I don't really know) and (most likely) possessed a cemented Vibram-esque rubber outsole. This being my first pair, I didn't really take care of them - so fast forward to now, the 'genuine leather' upper at the toe-cap section is scratched to oblivion, and same goes for the heel section of the upper as well for both pairs. The sole at the heel section also has holes, and water tends to leak at the toe section when stepping through damp terrain. I was thinking of getting them resoled, but after having done extensive research I concluded that those boots most likely had a cemented outsole, so I scrapped the idea and began looking for a better quality replacement. Thus, here I am.
Prior to Purchase
Now that I have a good excuse to invest in some quality footwear, I began my search. First, I began to familiarize myself with the technicals and anatomy (of which I am still in the process of familiarization) of boots. Then, I began to craft my criteria for a purchase; Some of these include:
- Good quality leather from a reliable and reputable source.
- Durable construction that allows future repairs and/or modifications.
- (Relatively) Affordable price, for a student and as a beginner boot.
- Versatile and timeless form, that will hopefully get better with age and such that it will go with the majority of my wardrobe.
- Versatile in function. Can go out in the bush and be equally comfortable in the urban jungle - and look good doing it.
There were some local options in the form of Merchant 1948 (a local footwear retailer), but all of their boots were either too big or looked weird, or both. There is the ubiquitous R.M. Williams, but the form of the Chelsea/Gusset boot was not really tickling my senses for beginner boot, and don't even get started on the price. There was also Wooten boots, but then again, they were too expensive and prices were even more outrageous for a financially limited individual as I am. So, I began looking online. Meermin was too dressy and not rugged enough, similar with Beckett Simonon with the bonus caveat that it doesn't ship here to Oz (damn it).
The classic go-to options, Red Wing Iron Rangers (IR) and Wolverine 1000 Miles (1000M), were viable options indeed as they were both reputable, hard-wearing, AND they have some retailers here that stock them so I could go try them on (except for the COVID-19 thing, so maybe not)! However, they were $528 AUD as of the time of writing and both had some fatal flaws. The IRs are nigh on impossible to dress up, and the 1000Ms had leather soles (at least the ones they were stocking here). I don't know about you, but I don't plan in slipping to my death anytime soon, so no. There were some other options, but those mentioned were the only ones I can think of at the top of my head right now. Then, along came the Thursdays.
I'm a cap-toe guy, so I was initially intrigued by the 'Captain' in the popular 'Brown' colourway and the 'Vanguard' in 'French Roast'. Then, along came the 'Rugged and Resilient' Captains in 'Arizona Adobe'. My, oh my did they tickle my fancy.
Let's see here:
- Leather from Horween (or LeFarc, if you're going by Stridewise' information)? Check.
- Goodyear welted? Check. Durable Leather? Well, it's in the name - Check.
- ~$273 AUD ($199 USD) -> relatively affordable for a financially ruined student? Check.
- (Note: shipping of around $36 AUD will ruin this later)
- Rugged form, but dressy silhouette? Check.
- Sleek enough for the city, but hardy enough for the bush? Check.
Now, this is where Thursday's (rather excellent in the initial get-go) customer service comes in. Shoutout to Marsha for being so patient with my endless barrage of questions!
My main enquiry was indeed about sizing, as my old boots were (I'm pretty sure) a EUR 41, but the majority of my footwear a US 7. I have tried on size EUR 40 on the local boots being sold here, but they were too big. So, I still don't know my size for the majority of footwear I'm going to buy, but US 7 seems to be a good reference. She initially recommended what was on the website - half-a-size down; However, when I mentioned the majority of my footwear being US 7, she correspondingly agreed and then recommended a size 7.
With regards to colour and form, I was initially sold on the 'Arizona Adobe' Captains and on the 'French Roast' Vanguards. This was because I found plain-toe boots to be hit or (mostly) miss, as the ones I have tried make it look like my feet are disproportionately elongated. Not a good look, so I preferred cap-toes as they broke the expanse of leather at the toes, thus making my feet not look like clown shoes. I, for one, however, like variety and I found that the majority of my dressier boots are cap-toe, so I gave the Presidents a go as they were, essentially, the plain-toe Captains.
Since they recently released the 'Whiskey' colourway for both the Captains and Presidents, I looked at the Captains first. I was enamoured by the rich brown hue - they were the perfect balance of light and dark. I was also initially hooked on the new StormKing outsole of the Captains, but I was ultimately swayed by the Dainite-like soles of the Presidents because of my eventual use for them. Let's face it - there aren't a lot of times I'm going to go hiking, and if I want to go hiking I would rather have boots/footwear purposely built for this endeavour; however, a little hiking wouldn't go amiss, wouldn't it? Thus, Whiskey Presidents it is.
The Vanguards were only an option because the factory seconds were the same price as the regular Captains/Presidents, but since I haven't tried one on for size and the policy of no returns/exchanges for seconds, the Vanguards were crossed out.

So far, so good.
Leather and Form
The leather, according to Thursday, is sourced from "Tier 1 USA Cattle" (according to my correspondence with Thursday). The website also mentions Horween, so the logical leap of Thursday sourcing their Tier 1 cattle leather from Horween is not far; however, Stridewise mentions that their leather is sourced from LeFarc. Either or, the leather source seems to be quite reputable.
The colour of the leather is interesting. It is of the 'Whiskey' colourway, but I do not see the resemblance to the colour of the alcohol. Rather, the colour is more of a rich, lustrous, matte milk chocolate. Like when one melts a block of Cadbury's Dairy Milk, but a lot darker.
The silhouette of the boot is one of the main reasons I was enticed by this boot. It is quite slim, but not so slim as to restrict itself to strictly dressy. The 'informality of the leather brought upon by its matte finish elevates it to a versatility I haven't seen in a lot of boots and makes it appropriate to more rugged situations.
Overall, the boot does excellently in this category.
Fit and Comfort
Now, the make-or-break - the fit. Fingers crossed, I put them on. No struggle. Oh, they fit! And perfectly at that - snug, but not choking and the toe box was not painfully slim on both the x, y and z dimensions. Plus, the leather will stretch, so I reasoned that if it was too snug the boot will eventually accept my rule and conform to my foot.
When walking there was minimal heel slippage, but I think this could be remedied with the appropriate lacing technique.
Because the leather was stiff but still (relatively) quite soft, at least to my inexperienced feet, I suppose that the boots will break-in after approximately 5 wears - 6 to 7, to be sure.
Now, your mileage may vary as this depends on the length of time you are wearing them and the stiffness of the leather and various other factors, namely your gait and your foot.
Because of these aforementioned points, coupled with the Poron insole and glove lining, the comfort is quite good. I would have no problem wearing these for an extended amount of time.
Overall, the fit is essentially perfect and the comfort, really, quite good.
Upon further inspection, the initial high faded. Being new to leather footwear, I thus have little to no experience regarding what I should be expecting.
At first, there were some slight scratches on the leather. Nothing too deep, so not too worrying. Some frayed along the welt, however, sent some alarms ringing. Not too bad, that can be dealt with.
The killer, though, was the crack on the welt - not sure if that is normal at all. I think the boots could take it, and coupled with the long shipping time should I get them exchanged, consequently makes me not worry too much. Probably should though, but I am not.
Furthermore, the extra needle hole on the left boot gave me a little cheeky chuckle. Ha.
So, overall, it is ok.
All my enquiries at that start were replied to patiently and quickly. The questions I gave were quite comprehensive, and the answers reflected that. I do not know anything about customer care after purchase, but I would imagine it to be more or less the same.
Overall, quite good.
Final ThoughtsOverall, Thursday seems to offer a lot of value for their boots. Goodyear welt construction enables re-soling, the leather quality and colour is palpably good, and customer care is very good. There are a few QC issues, but I opine that these are minor. I know that Thursdays gets a lot of flak here, but with time comes experience, and they seemed to have (mostly) ironed out their issues and, hopefully, they continue to do so. Likewise, I hope the boots will hold up for the next few years - as my old ones did! Hopefully, you got something out of this piece - and didn't bore you by its length along the way :)
