A list of uTorrent alternatives

I saw \u\thekodols post here & decided to port over a post I Originally made for a small games tracker I'm on because I kept seeing a lot of the users either sticking to uTorrent 2.2.1 or qBittorrent (which still needs fixing up in places). I quickly converted this from the original (and messy) BBCode post so probably needs fiingx (yes, I'll get around to fixing the screenshots soon). Let me know if you have more clients to add!
edit: the idea behind the post was to be give an objective-to-positive overview for each client and then rank them so the client at the top is better than a client at the bottom, feel free to add to the pros and cons for each, I'll work them in later
App Name & download link Supported OS - License - Screenshot Comments
Deluge Linux, Win / OpenSource One of the many alternatives on this list that can act as a Daemon (i.e. the frontend & "engine" can be separated if you wish) Deluge features stability, a growing no. of plugins & flexibility while still being easy to use & configure. By default it looks like a cleaned up uTorrent but it can have many fronts! A helpful wiki & community is what pushes this app to the top of the pile. Here's the User Guide & a Script to shift from uTorrent to Deluge.
qBittorrent Linux, Win, Mac / OpenSource A popular alternative, qBittorrent is known for its uTorrent-like interface which includes the web-UI, super seeding, label & RSS options. However it has annoyances that clients like Deluge or rTorrent don't (e.g. "why does qB upload at 2kb/not connect to peers? it works fine on uT2.2.1 on the same port!" is a common complaint I see) Its constantly updated though so hopefully these issues will be ironed out someday. If you choose qB you might find this thread (complete with tool to help migrate from uTorrent to qBittorrent) handy.
Transmission Linux, Mac, Win(Unofficial but updated) / OpenSource Referred to by some as "Deluge's hick cousin" Transmission is a simple Bittorrent engine first, like Deluge it can also be run as a Daemon with various frontends. Where it shines is it's memory usage - it's footprint is so tiny it's been used to power torrent friendly routers. The "hick" part comes in when you realise how barebones it is, it just doesn't have as many add-ons or features as rTorrent / Deluge do. e.g want labels? no. (actually more like a "not yet") Otherwise a great, cross-platform solution. Windows ver: http://sourceforge.net/projects/trqtw/
FrostWire Linux, Mac, Android, Win. / Opensource There’s a reason Vuze isn’t on this list - it used to be called Azureus & wasn't bundled with adware like Vuze is now. The engine (still called Azureus) is open source the rest however isn’t. FrostWire, while having a polished/heavy front-end & way too many features (in-app search, media player etc) sports Azureus’s back end - making the need for the crapware Vuze useless.
Halite Windows Only / Opensource A No nonsense lightweight bitorrent client that takes LESS memory than uTorrent when under a heavy load, while still packing features like Super Seeding. Has been steadily updated since 2006, latest ver. is from Feb 2015.
rTorrent *nix, Mac, Win/ (Unofficial but updated) / OpenSource Many rank rTorrent as the most robust torrent client ever. Popularly coupled with the ruTorrent web ui frontend, people claim it seeds hundreds of mega torrents containing thousands of files, each torrent being in the GBs or even TBs range. However the reality is: it’s down to how you run it. It’s biggest asset is also its biggest flaw: It's Flexible. A text based client by default, to run it well you WILL need to read up. To its advantage rTorrent has a stonking no. of plugins (aka scripts) e.g. need to auto-extract a frame from a downloading movie to check its quality? There's a script. Something we've noticed from people hopping onto our IRC channel for help is the reliability doesn’t transfer completely over to the Windows ver. Windows build: https://rtwi.jmk.hu/wiki/rTorrentOnWindows
Tribler Linux, Mac, Win. / Open Source Backed by EU universities & developed for 9+ years now - Tribler has actual (graduating) scientists studying p2p technology working on it. It's a test ground for experimental features that might attract people, many of which are now common. Amongst its highlights are: • Designed to run off TV hardware (till 2009) which is why it still "offers a Youtube-style service. Bittorrent-compatible streaming, fast search thumbnail previews & comments." • Uses Social Network ideologies for downloading (i.e. you can make "friends"and they can "help" your Downloads by hosting parts of files). • Search torrents hosted by other tribler users, since this isn’t some “Tribler only” p2p system (unlike eg. RetroShare or AresGalaxy) • Includes Last.fm & Amazon-ish recommendations based on taste (after about a dozen downloads). • The addition it's most known for is itsmodification of TOR routing technology to create an anonymous` Tribler based network. This is the only decentralized bittorrent client with this feature. It's been requested on utorrent’s suggestions board for over 6 years till they quietly moved it elsewhere (and it still got popular.). So why isn't it used more? For one, many are put off by Tribler's size. There's also no denying it has way more than what uTorrent users are used to. Some complain of sluggish performance, many are attracted by its "experimental" features and then learn their they're not fully implemented. Whatever the reason, Tribler’s merits are usually passed by & while you shouldn’t be forced to use it you should be aware that it's working proof of what's possible using bittorrent tech. (i.e. ideas that can be implemented in ANY torrent app) while delivering as a client too.
uGet Linux, BSD, Android, Win / Open Source With this entry begins a string of multi-protocol (i.e. not only bitorrent) clients. uGet is a fairly obscure multiprotocol downloader & I honestly don't know why. With an easy to use GUI & a Large no. of familiar customizations (from scheduling to categorizing to browser integration) uGet lets you access HTTP/FTP/bittorrent & metalink links without trying to be different. Personally I rank this as a true uTorrent killer but perhaps it lacks features or has bugs I don't know of. My simple test runs had no issues, the http clipboard downloader worked well, my torrent downloaded just fine & features like categorization (think uTorrent labels) worked too. uGet's Bittorrent & metalink support come from a plugin for the powerful commandline only Aria2.
Aria2 Linux, Win, Mac / Open Source If rTorrent could use more than just bittorrent as a protocol, it'd be aria2. Having been around a LOT longer than I expected (9+ years) aria2 is a surprisingly easy to use command line download client, like shareaza it lets your combine the protocols it supports (i.e. HTTP/FTP/Bittorrent/metalink) to download a file e.g. "aria2c hʈʈp://a.org/ubuntu.iso fʈp://b.org/ubuntu.iso hʈʈp://c.org/ubuntu.torrent" will have aria2 intelligently download using all 3 sources! Although lacking a frontend the aforementioned uGet & the constantly updated web-ui (see screenshot) make up for this btw if you're a Tixati stats lover the web-ui may be for you.
Ares Galaxy Windows/Opensource Similar to Frostwire (but with its own engine) Ares Galaxy has 2 parts to it. One is a custom Ares2Ares only file sharing system, the second is a bittorrent client which works well. It comes with built in Chat Rooms (again Ares2Ares only), a media player, & an organizer for your downloads. However Its best you only use only the bittorrent part - the Ares2Ares mode is reportedly infested by Copyright shills..
MLDonkey Linux, Win, Mac, / Open Source Low on the list because a) there hasn't been an update to it for more than 11 months at the time of writing. & b) like rTorrent, requires work to get a GUI up. It is however a p2p engine first - & a powerhouse - allowing you to connect to ~6 different p2p protocols including bittorrent. It Comes with various frontends http://mldonkey.sourceforge.net/Gui For a feature list: http://mldonkey.sourceforge.net/MLdonkey
Shareaza Windows /Open Source Shareaza is like the Simpsons of the p2p world i.e. it did a lot of things first! My favorite one is that shareaza is the only p2p client I know of that can use 4 p2p protocols (i.e. edonkey, bittorrent, gnutella & gnutella2) simultaneously to download one file (assuming that exact file exists on each network). It also comes with a built in IRC client too! So why'd it lose fans? Long story short: a series of bad press & the entry of much lighter, cleaner looking & focused apps. Like a certain Utorrent, which brings us to...
...the end of this list! I should include The Inspiration for this post & its Last version without ads in any form. Which is Utorrent 2.2.1 but honestly I wouldn't recommend it, not because its bad, but because it's getting old & harder to work with, I'm noticing an increase in complaints rolling in usually with a combo of newer windows & large torrents leading to crashes (yet another thing qBittorrent seems to mimic ;) ) & it honestly isn't uTorrent 2.x's fault. To its credit, it [i]does[/i] work to a certain point. So does every other client on this list.
The criteria for this list was: - Open source preferred. - Updated frequently. Clients that haven’t seen an update since 2013 aren’t considered. - Has to include bittorrent as a protocol (duh) so no Retroshare or DC++. - Transparent, this means even if a toolbar comes with a client, it should be easy to spot, should give you a choice, & it shouldn’t be hidden or difficult to get rid of (I never got to test this rule out, since I didn't come across any).
Many clients went off the list because it didn't meet the criteria above, this also meant valid closed source Android clients didn't make the list! Below are 3 of them that are closed source, Ad driven but NOT speed limited, all can be found in the Play store: * Flud * aTorrent * Vuze Torrent Downloader
Also If you're the kind that's still crushing hard on "uTorrent 2.2.1 works just fine for me thanks" logic, then perhaps you'll like these outdated nuggets too: 1. Patchy (Open source) 2. KTorrent (Open Source) 3. Bit Tornado (Closed source) 4. BareTorrent (Open Source) 5. MediaGet (Closed source) 6. Torch (Closed Source, adware) 7. Vuze (Closed Source (for frontend & features), adware) 8. Bittorrent (Old ver. Open Source, current ver. closed source & based off uTorrent - the only difference is the color, Bittorrent is purple.) 9. FinalTorrent (closed source) 10. & the #1 most used torrent client in the world: Xunlei aka Thunder (God Tier Adware)

[Guide/Discussion] Cheap New Vegas tablet purchase guide

Hey all
I made a thread earlier about my £30 New Vegas Tablet
https://www.reddit.com/fnv/comments/asndo3/discussion_meet_my_30_new_vegas_machine_a_cheap/
A lot of the responses I got was from people wanting to know how to set this up for themselves. So below is going to be an almost complete guide to how I've set it up. I will try my best to cover all aspects of setting it up and purchasing. Most of this guide will be aiming at cost reduction and OS tinkering, So it involves a lot of fiddling. If thats not your thing then you can still skip some parts, You may even find better options than me if you're willing to search longer.

I live in the UK so the pricing may work out differently for you, especially in the US or anywhere else but I have done some research and I'll try my best to bring that price down to as close to what I paid in the UK. The US stuff will be a lot shorter as I have zero experience in that market but I'll try my best. I will not be covering other places as that would make this guide way too long. Using the information here you should still be able to get a rough idea of what you'll need to do to get the cheapest option
I am open to suggestions and will add anything you think I've missed. Also I may regret this but feel free to message me if you have any issues or questions I didn't cover here. There is a lot of little things I may forget about but I'm sure you'll make me aware of it. Be aware that this comes with a few quirks and drawbacks but I will recommend things to alleviate those issues if I can.

So lets begin

Purchase Options
This part is probably the most difficult to recommend as it is down to your own personal preference and budget along with how much you are willing to spend. This will affect performance and work down the road as a less powerful machine will require a bit more tweaking to fully get the most out of it. Feel free to use amazon if you aren't happy with used products but remember that'll probably end up doubling if not tripling the price.
UK Redditors
I found the best place in the UK to pick up a cheap windows tablet is Webuy (or CeX) online. They have a database of listings by store location, They do delivery to your address from the shop which can take a week but for me it was only afew days. They are listed by condition with C being the worst (I think). My tablet was graded as C but when it arrived it was almost brand new with only a small amount of wear. They are sturdy devices unless you plan on throwing it at the floor anytime soon. They are used but they do come with a warranty in case they arrive damaged which I've never had issue with since they do in house testing beforehand.
They go out of stock and back in stock constantly so if you find it listed as out of stock, then you can either wait or just spend the extra couple of pounds to get the next grade up.
Start by going to their website
https://uk.webuy.com
and using the search function at the top right with the term "Linx". After that you will see a checkbox to the left which says "in stock only" so that you don't see once unavailable for purchase. Sort it all by price "Low to High" and scroll a little bit until you find a Linx 7 W8 model
(ignore the keyboards unless you have the money, I bought an attachable one for my old 1010 and it helped with usability)
You must make sure it is a Windows 8/W8 machine as you need this OS to even consider running desktop applications.
This is the part where is it upto you to make a decision.
If you buy the Linx 7 Model you will be stuck with 1GB of Ram. This is the lowest point of entry for this guide. They usually cost around £25/£45 depending on what is in stock at that time. The 7 model has only 1 micro USB port for both charging and USB, so if you don't have a bluetooth controller your option is to purchase a splitter cable or bluetooth.
If you have PS3 or PS4 controller, (like me) there are workarounds to getting it up and running wirelessly with bluetooth using DS3 Tool or BetterDS3. I will admit I'm not too well versed on this issue as I use a cable and get about 2 hour sessions each charge, More if I put the brightness down.
If you have alittle more cash to spare then I recommend getting a Linx 10, you'll get double the ram and probably less issues. I would say go for this option if you want to squeeze that extra performance out. The 10 model comes with full sized USB ports, but on some older ones, this may not be the case and you'll have to refer to my comments about the 7 and using wireless bluetooth.
As a sidenote, there is another 10 option called "1010" which I know has full sized USB since I used to own one before I accidently stood on it but these may cost you abit more.
Either way, both tablets are viable options. The 10 will cost about £50 which is still cheap as anything for what you'll be getting.

US Redditors
Most of what I said for the UK applies to the US but I don't really have much experience with US purchases. I did find some really cheap machines on US Ebay and some do include 2GB options. This is something you may need to look into. If it has Windows 10/Windows 8 then it should be fine but I can't be 100% sure.
So I went on Ebay and searched "Windows Tablets" and placed the price on Low to High. I filtered out the garbage by specifying the OS as Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 in the refinements and specs on the left hand side. You are looking for a device with at least 1GB of ram and 32GB of storage. Don't bother with a 16GB model unless you have a spare SD card lying around. Plus with the 16GB models there is no guarantee of expandable storage. You may accidently purchase something which you wont be able to fit the game install onto, unless you want to have a permanent USB stick attached to it. Just be sure to check the specs for an SD Card Slot
Examples:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Venue-8-Pro-5830-T01D-32GB-Windows-8-1-Wi-Fi-8in-Black-B-Grade/264203217704?epid=172943821&hash=item3d83bd2b28:g:zucAAOSwX4VcBsdx:rk:2:pf:1&LH_ItemCondition=4%7C3&LH_BIN=1&frcectupt=true

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Trio-PRO-BOOK-10-1-Windows-10-2-in-1-Tablet-32GB/233134833831?hash=item3647eb40a7:g:LlUAAOSw0bpcZya4:rk:4:pf:1&LH_ItemCondition=4%7C3&LH_BIN=1&frcectupt=true
The second one seems to require an OS installation but that is really easy to setup, just use another computer to download the Windows Installation Tool to USB, Takes about 10/20 minutes max and install takes 30/40 roughly. Not hard at all.

Accessories and Extras
Since a lot of these cheap tablets have microUSB you'll probably need to buy a MicroUSB to USB connector which are really cheap anyway. I'm providing examples but I've easily found ones for under £1 and under $1. So this barely adds to the price in my opinion. I already owned one so I had no issue.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dynamode-USB-Female-Micro-Cable/dp/B00A9Q03FW/ref=sr_1_1?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1550700253&sr=8-1&keywords=Micro+USB+to+USB&refinements=p_76%3A419159031

If you need a really cheap controller and don't have spare 360 controller lying around, you can buy old used PS3 pads from pretty much anywhere these days and install a program called DS3 Tool or BetterDS3. This software will allow you to emulate a 360 controller and make the machine think you're using one. It also includes options to remap keys and use bluetooth to connect it wirelessly.
Be really weary about the Motioninjoy DS3 Tool though, It has been noted as being a dodgy piece of software that sends data back to strange places. If in doubt, use better ds3 instead since that was made as a alternative to the Motioninjoy version. (I think you may still have to install DS3 Tool though)
http://betterds3.ciebiera.net
https://filehippo.com/download_motioninjoy_ds3_tool/
If you have issues with those links I can provide access to my version of the program with offline files which you can also use if you aren't sure. You can then block it through the firewall, Just leave a message and I'll edit this guide.
Another quick sidenote, If you plan on using mods like "Real Time Settler" or "Solid Project" then you'll probably need to use Joy2Key for the keyboard buttons. These can easily be mapped to the controller once you activate 360 controller emulation.
https://joytokey.net/en/

Setting up the OS
This applies to all models of tablets and even old desktops. I do this on most underpowered machines as Windows 10 can be catastrophic to old hardware. Before beginning ensure the machine is updated and all prerequisites for your game/games are installed as it will be pain to do once you've followed the guide. Also keep a keyboard or mouse handy just incase by using the micro USB port. It will help make the process faster.
You will render a lot of Microsoft features broken and you may have issues trying to do updates in the future. My intention here is to create a machine just for New Vegas, you'll find huge performance gains at the cost of features. You shouldn't have any issues running Desktop 32bit apps.
This may seem like overkill but if you are on a limited hardware budget, you need to do it for a smooth experience
When you've purchased your device you'll probably find that it runs like absolute turd on default settings. This is a windows issue, There are a lot of features and a lot of it is unnecessary for what we want the machine to be doing. If you have purchased Fallout: New Vegas on steam then I assume you know how to do all this. GOG editions should work too, so just install as normal.
You'll be disabling some security features, so be aware of that, and also uninstalling preloaded crapware to save as much ram and storage space as we possibly can.

To start, Install a program called "Winaero Tweaker". This software will help massively in improving performance of the machine. It also cuts out having to use the command line and scrolling through legacy options in control panel.
Install CCleaner too so that we can remove Microsoft apps and clear out some stuff quicker. Since we are disabling automatic maintenance, its going to make that cleaning process manual but it should only need to be done once a month, even less if you just play New Vegas.
https://winaero.com/download.php?view.1796
https://www.ccleaner.com

So once you've installed both of those, start up winaero tweaker.
On the left side there will be a list of options, starting from the top do the following (this applies to the latest version of W10 but also works for windows 8, you may find some options are missing but don't worry)
Behaviour
- Disable all Ads in Windows 10 (All checkboxes)
- Disable Automatic Maintenance
- Disable Driver Updates
- Disable MRT from installing
- Disable Timeline
- Disable Windows Update (This is by far the most important)
- Disable error reporting
- Disable New Apps Notification
Desktop and Taskbar
- Disable Live Tiles
- Disable Web Search and Cortana
- Disable Taskbar Thumbnails
- Put wallpaper quality to its lowest to the left
Settings and Control Panel
- Disable Online & Video Tips
File Explorer
- Disable Search History
Windows Defender
- Disable Windows Defender (another important one)
- Ensure protection against adware is not checked
Windows Apps
- Disable Auto-Update of Store Apps
Privacy
- Disable Telemetry

You can tweak a few more like jump lists and aero lite if you really want too. After all that is done, reboot the machine and you'll it'll feel ten times more responsive.
Next we need to run CCleaner,
go to Options>>Advanced
and uncheck both options for "Only Delete Files older than 24 Hours"
Then go to "Smart Cleaning" and disable it. (This uses ram)
Next click Tools >>> Uninstall
Remove all Apps you won't be using.
So things like Wallet, Microsoft Pay, Pre-installed apps, Paint 3D, Skype. I wouldn't recommend uninstalling the store just incase you want to use it later on,
(you may need to renenable Windows Update to install those apps)
This isn't essential it just helps clear the OS as much as we can.
The reason we are using CCleaner is because the Apps and Features won't allow for removing system apps. Keep in mind this will cause some windows features to have issues but we only need it to run New Vegas so it shouldn't matter.

Next we need to disable any services that are running that we don't need
So hold your finger down on the start button until you get a large context menu and press "Run"
Type - Services.msc and disable the following
Data Usage
Delivery Optimization
Diagnostic Policy Service
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Geolocation Service
Payments and NFC/SE Manager
Print Spooler
Program Compatibility Manager
Shell Hardware Detection
Update Orchestrator Service
Windows Image Acquisition
Windows Remediation Service
Windows Search
Windows Update Medic Service
Reboot the machine again and you're ready to go.

Game Performance
This is the easiest part of the guide and using only one mod.
Some people use BethINI but I use New Vegas Configurator, I find the interface a lot better and simplier. Credit to Rudolf Enberg for this amazingly simple tool
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/40442
Once installed you have options depending on what machine you have. If you have a machine with 2GB of ram you don't have to worry too much about vanilla performance as even on default settings it should perform at least adequately, if you find issues just lower the resolution as this is normally the biggest cause of low FPS.
If you have the 7 Inch 1GB machine you'll need to do things to avoid hitches.
Start by clicking Performance
The fade distance options affect frame rate quite a bit, I usually have my object fade higher than most since I tend to notice it more. My item fades are quite low since entering places with a lot of scrap causes frame drops. You can play with them but if in doubt just go for 5/6 across the board, lowering if needed.
Enable all of these options
Threaded Morpher
Threaded Blood
Thread Particles
Threaded AI
Background Pathing
Models Cloned
Cells Loaded
Multithreaded Tress
Navmesh Upd
On the Linx 7 it has a 4 Core CPU so set havok Threads to 4

You can turn render grass off for more FPS if needed but I kept it on and used a high density (100). You can also use a autoexec for this but you can just use the tool. Use the console in game if you want to try it on or off on the fly.
I kept the cell buffers at default for now but if you find yourself needing an extra squeeze give it a try since 1GB is quite pitiful.
Don't touch Grids Loaded as this will mess up your save if you already have one. Its telling the game how many areas to load. Its best to keep it at default
Enable "Premptively Unload Cells"
Use Hard Drive cache
Next we go to Graphics
Because I don't mind it looking shitty I run at 800x600 at full screen with my GPU panel options set to stretch to full screen. It looks abit crappy but its a Guaranteed way to keep the frames up
Turn on Vertical Sync unless you want objects to fly around the room
I disable most of the options for performance but some can be enabled and it can still work great. Recommended you keep them low if you want to use mods though.
If in doubt keep everything on low and turn the effects off. You should be fine with vanilla though. You can also tweak FOV in general if you find the resolution makes everything too zoomed in. I've experimented with high settings and you can tweak it to look great with some trial and error.

Mods and improvements
Its personal preference what you do here. Right now I am currently running about 20 mods, including TTW and a few things like loot menu. I recommend you don't go too crazy, especially if you have 1GB of ram. The more mods you add the longer your load times will be. With TTW this can extend it a bit. Keep that in mind.
I may add another section with my load order for reference in the future.

In Closing
I know some of you are probably thinking "what is the point of all this".
I didn't really have much money growing up so I fiddled with my computers to try squeeze the best out of them. One of my first jumps into Fallout modding/workarounds was with an old Acer Intel potato laptop. If you are a regular community member you may remember a very old DLL workaround method I used a few years ago to get Fallout 3 working on even older Intel GPUs. I posted it to a little know forum called "Techgage" and it is the most viewed on that website.

The information is out of date now but Its good to look back on how far we've came.
From struggling to run it on a full sized laptop, to now being able to run it on a 7 inch £30 tablet. I have no doubt in the next few years we'll probably have these games running on our phones. Very exciting

Well that's about it. I think a lot of you will have some issues and like I said, I will be here to answer them all as best I can. I will be updating this as time goes by just to fix any typos and maybe clean it up a bit as I've been writing for about 2 hours now. Any suggestions feel free to comment and I can add them to this list.
If I'm wrong on anything please do tell me so I can issues corrections.
Good Luck Guys
